Chapter Thirteen

The small plane skimmed low over the water that looked pure turquoise blue under a sky that was a rich cloudless blue. The plane was so low Lily could see the shadow of the twin engine aircraft moving across the rippling surface of the sea. Adrenaline flooded through her tired body. They were almost there now. This was the final leg in a long tiresome journey. It was no-ones fault that the trip from Austria to New Zealand hadn’t been as simple as anyone had hoped, but she was certainly sick of the sight of airports and aeroplanes.

Cora grabbed her arm, her face a shade of pale green usually only seen in the very ill, as the light aircraft skipped across an area of turbulence with a violent shudder.

“Not much further,” Lily told her, her voice loud so Cora would hear her over the drone of the engines. She gently patted Cora’s hand while ignoring the way her fingers dug into bone and muscle. Lily understood what it was to fear now, perhaps more than she ever had before and she wasn’t going to criticize Cora for it.

“It’ll be about fifteen minutes Miss,” the pilot shouted back.

Wayne she reminded herself, one of Connor’s contacts not hers. They’d avoided contacting anyone connected to her. She’d tried hard not to resent it, she even understood the logic of it. Paul had tracked her down once using an associate she’d thought she could trust, but it didn’t mean she liked putting herself so completely in someone else’s hands. Connor’s hands. If it had been anyone else she would have baulked at the idea, but she found her trust for Connor was deepening by the day and for a woman who completely trusted few people in the world, that was something of a personal miracle.

The plane bounced again, skipping across a pocket of cold air and Cora’s hand dug into her forearm again. She was going to have fingertip shaped bruises by tomorrow.

“You’re going to love New Zealand,” Lily said, her voice deliberately calm. “They say it looks like England would have a couple of hundred years ago. Green and unspoilt.”

“That’s why so many films are shot here,” Mark added. “It’s got loads of wide open spaces.”

Cora nodded, but she still looked like she was going to be sick if the plane jolted again.

“Yeah it’s a beautiful country,” Wayne commented. “Actually the only reason I’ll be able to get you this close to where you want to be is because of the film industry. If a runway hadn’t been put in, it would have taken days to get there.”

And would have in Rudi Eerntein’s day Lily mused, which was exactly why he’d chosen such a remote location. He could never have guessed that film directors would be drawn here when they were looking for locations to film epic battles.

“We appreciate you flying us here Wayne,” Lily replied loudly. “We have a big enough area to search without spending several days hiking here in the first place.
